Overall the Metaphorical meaning of the food in the film has to do with the reminder of the past. The world the film displays is a grim and sad world. The value of human life is also forgotten for the most part. An example of this lies in the scene after Heston is romantic with the woman and it cuts to him walking outside a church I think, and he comes across a dead woman whose child is still alive and next to her. Another touch they added was having rope tied to the mothers and child’s hand. Which is done because of the over crowding I imagine. This world that started with good improvements as was shown in the opening credits showing the various past inventions that did improve our lives, but debatably led to what the world of the film became. Because food is another step of human knowledge making another invention, except in this case people are used for food. I would probably do most of the same things Heston did in the film, because there is only so much he can do, because of the extent of the level of corruption that exists in the films world. In “Futuristic Foodways: The Metaphorical Meaning of Food in Science Fiction Film”, by Laurel Forrester, Forrester talks about on page 264 it talks about how food can affect us on a personal level and a cultural level. Which in the case of the film does certainly affect the characters especially on a personal level because they either have never seen regular food or haven't seen it in years. Also on page 252 Forrester makes reference to the food in “Star Trek”. Food often times in science fiction films can reflect the world of the film. In “Star Trek” the food is tiny and usually looked like a bunch of small blocks. Blocks which where not animal based, which is a interesting detail in retrospect because of the growing usage of similar foods in the present. However, in “Soylent Green” the food also reflects the world of the film where regular food is in short supply and they use the “Soylent foods” to replace it.

In the film the power of food is shown through Babette making the french food for the village, and the villagers liking it. Despite the ethnics they live by they still like the food. Which is very significant because the movie uses the food as a way to bring people together. Also in this case it is very different food that they have never had before. The food serves as a means of exposing them to different foods. This although it is not a massive thing does serve as something of a conflict for the film. Even though they did end up liking it, they were very hesitant, but after eating the food they do end up liking it. In addition there is the aspect of why they were hesitant at first. It is because of their puritan beliefs that result in this. Which is taken to mean not eating very fancy, or special food. Instead they eat very basic foods, which is what they mostly eat. However, it does beg the question whether food that people eat should be not necessarily fancy, but whether it should ...

                              By F. Mason Hertrich The food in both films serves a big role. That of bringing people together, especially in " Soul Food " (1997). Wherein the family fights about problems they have, but the food is ultimately what brings them together. In " Once Upon a Time ..." (1995) the food mainly serves as a way of reflecting how they are treated. For example Richard Roundtree's is faced with the problem of many people not accepting his ice. Which doesn't stop the town from still buying from him. Which is obviously motivated by the fact that the reason many people are not buying from him is because he is black. Also the food is used much more in a community sense when they are at the Church. As pointed out by Balthrope the grandfather is never seen at his home cooking, but helps cook at the Church. By F. Mason Hertrich I chose the class because it greatly relates to my major. Also because I am very interested in learning about how food can be used in film. What I hope to accomplish in this course is to learn all about how food is used and portrayed in film, and what the filmmaker was trying to accomplish with it. Not to mention learning the difference between a “food movie” and a film that more displays it and makes it part of the scene and doesn’t affect the plot. Which is what a “food movie” is. A film that uses food or cooking to affect, and in some cases drive the plot. My favorite film is “Metropolis” (1927). The reason why is both from a historical perspective in regards to cinema, also the fact that the film on its own is great. It was one of the earlier films in the science fiction genre.
