I chose the class because it greatly relates to my major. Also because I am very interested in learning about how food can be used in film. What I hope to accomplish in this course is to learn all about how food is used and portrayed in film, and what the filmmaker was trying to accomplish with it. Not to mention learning the difference between a “food movie” and a film that more displays it and makes it part of the scene and doesn’t affect the plot. Which is what a “food movie” is. A film that uses food or cooking to affect, and in some cases drive the plot. My favorite film is “Metropolis” (1927). The reason why is both from a historical perspective in regards to cinema, also the fact that the film on its own is great. It was one of the earlier films in the science fiction genre. Using German expressionism, which is displayed both through the acting, and set design. The result of using this is that it can either visually capture how the characters are feeling, also the sets being used to convey a certain point. One example of this in the film is when the films main character goes to see his father after an accident in the fathers factory. The fathers office is very big and when his son comes in he stops him briefly to finish a thought. Both of these details are used to convey the fact that the father is detached from the common person. Which is also expressed in dialogue when the son asks what of the people who built the city and where they are, the father then says “where they belong”. “Where they belong” is living very poorly, because the city is a massive place where they have a massive gap in between the wealthy and poor. The very gap is expressed through this scene mostly visually which I consider to be really powerful and compelling.
